While travelling to Brunei, do try your best to adhere to the following do's and don'ts list:
Dos
- Shaking of hands lightly then bringing hand back to the chest (it is not customary to shake hands with the opposite sex)
- Using your thumb, with four fingers folded beneath it, as a pointer instead of your forefinger
- Wave for a taxi with the whole hand (palm facing downwards)
- Gifts and food should only be passed with the right hand, although it is acceptable to use the left hand with the right wrist for support.
- It is polite to accept even just a little food and drink when offered. When refusing anything offered, it is polite to touch the plate lightly with the right hand.
Don’ts
- The Brunei Government is run as a Malay Islamic Monarchy, do not insult or speak badly of the Sultan of Brunei or the Royal family.
- It is not acceptable to dress too casually when attending religious or business event.
- It would be considerate if you don’t eat or drink during the month Ramadan, from sunrise to sundown in the presence of Muslims.
